Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born on 21 November, 1985 in Malaysia is a comedian and actor. Chieng
is currently a senior correspondent on The Daily Show on Comedy Central and
creator and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student which
premiered on ABC (Australia) as well as Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was
born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng was
brought up in Singapore and the United States. He lived in Manchester, New
Hampshire, between 1989 and 1994. Chieng was a part of Trevor Noah at a
Melbourne comedy festival in 2013. The following year Chieng was selected to
audition for the correspondent role for The Daily Show, which Noah hosts.
Chieng was selected as one of the 10 Comics to Watch in Variety's July 2016
issue. In October, Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss the controversy
surrounding a Jesse Watters Fox News segment that was widely viewed as racist.
Chieng broadcast an expletive-laden critique of the conservative network's
segment. He also revisited New York City's Chinatown and Chinatown, where
Watters have mocked the residents and conducted more respectful interviews with
residents in Mandarin as well as Cantonese. The video was viewed by millions
and received coverage in the Washington Post and Slate In his youth, Chieng was
a Singapore Sea Scout. Although he has lived in Australia for the past decade,
Chieng is not a citizen or permanent residence status in Australia. Chieng made
the joke that he was an apologist for cynophobia on the 2018 Daily Show. But
Chieng later claimed that he is "100% not afraid of dogs" in an
interview.
